Fine Art Photography: A Photo Safari with Michael DeAngelis

Do you love the photography of Robert Frank? Henri Cartier-Bresson? Inspired by the color images of Stephen Shore and William Eggleston? Want to take a stab at making your own fine art photography?

Creating fine art of any kind is not just for the masters - anyone with a creative eye (everyone has one!) and an understanding of how to use a camera can take beautiful and unique photos. So channel your inspirations and come along on this exciting safari located at the National Gallery of Art.

This exciting Safari will start in the East Wing of the National Gallery of Art. Head back to the corner of the main concourse where the colorful panels are hanging to find our first meeting place. We’ll start with a brief discussion covering“photographic seeing,” fulfilling an artistic vision and how fine art photography differs from other forms of photography.  Essential elements of photographic composition will also be discussed.

The stunning architecture of the East Wing designed by I.M. Pei will serve as our model as you will learn how to “frame” your subject, how to use geometric elements to add intrigue to your photos and transform your image into a three dimensional world! Continuing along on the safari, you will ascend through the levels of the gallery as you practice approaching photos from different view points.

The safari will conclude at the inspiring LED-lit moving walkway that connects the the two wings of the NGA. You will have the opportunity to use the mesmerizing light sculpture designed by Leo Villareal to continue to develop your creative eye—a perfect chance to put your new skills to the test!
