Cherry Blossoms By Land and Sea!
Sunday, April 8, 2012 | 10:00 am-12:30 pm
As we prepare for the BIG Centennial of the Cherry Blossoms in 2012, we want you to see and photograph the cherry blossom trees from ALL sides, from the land AND from the water!
Did you know that some of the most beautiful cherry trees in DC are not just on the Tidal Basin but also planted along Washington Channel on Ohio Drive SW in East Potomac Park? (In fact, Ohio Drive is the location of the only remaining trees from the original gift in 1912.)
We start our three-hour Safari at the DC waterfront near the Tidal Basin at the docks of Capital Yacht Charters at 1300 Maine Avenue SW with a 15-minute orientation on good travel photography techniques and how to use all the features of your camera.
We then climb aboard the Capitol Yacht boat as she begins her 60-minute voyage, taking us first along the Washington Channel so that we get a GREAT view of the magnificent cherry trees in the morning sun along East Potomac Park. Then she swings around the park to travel northwest into the Potomac River and up along Ohio Drive, pulling along cherry-tree-lined West Potomac Park to get good angle shots on the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument.
Following our cruise, we hike 2 blocks over to the Tidal Basin parking lot at 1500 Maine Ave SW to photograph the blossoms along the Basin, with its great views of the Jefferson Memorial framed in blossoms.
Washington Photo Safari is an official activity of the 2012 National Cherry Blossom Festival. Architectural photographer and Washington Photo Safari director E. David Luria guides the safari, with tips on camera usage, composition, exposure, lighting and white balance and showing you all the best vantage points to photograph the trees from the land AND the water! Who else in your camera club will have such great pictures? NOBODY!
The National Cherry Blossom Festival is DC’s signature springtime event. The 2012 Festival is March 20 - April 27, and features daily cultural performances, sporting events, arts & crafts, demonstrations and other special events. The National Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates the 100th anniversary of the gift of the cherry blossom trees and the enduring friendship between the citizens of the United States and Japan. For schedules and information visit nationalcherryblossomfestival.org or call the Festival hotline at (877) 44BLOOM.
