Washington Photo Safari™
Washington Photo Safari™ teaches the techniques of photography by taking visitors and local residents on half-day and full-day photo shoots around key sites of the nation’s capital and other cities, while an accompanying professional photographer offers participants extensive tips in the use of several camera models, image composition and design, proper exposure and lighting, and posing “models” to the best effect. Top-ranked in Google search results, Washington Photo Safari is now one of the country’s largest providers of hands-on photography training field trips with a team of 12 professional photographers giving instruction to over 300 clients every month on local, domestic, and international itineraries.
Photographers of all skill levels are invited to participate in the photo Safaris and any camera is acceptable, even cell phone cameras! Washington Photo Safari now conducts 7 to 8 photo excursions every week, rain or shine, throughout the entire year. Safaris are also presented in close-by locations including New York, Frederick, Shenandoah Valley, Annapolis and Baltimore. Principal travel photography workshops cover the major sights of DC including the monuments, memorials, and cathedrals. Beyond these key sights, specialty Safaris are offered in techniques in nature photography, f stops and shutter speeds, indoor/outdoor architectural, food, pet, macro, wedding, abstracts, candid kids, fine arts, proper/creative flash, and indoor and outdoor portraiture. Special night-time photography workshops are offered including Monuments at Night and Lafayette Park at Night.
During DC’s beautiful cherry blossom season, photo Safaris are provided at least twice a day around the Tidal Basin. To meet specific photography needs, Washington Photo Safari offers one-on-one private tutoring
and small group Safaris in all aspects of photography, and workshops on the most popular Canon and Nikon SLR models. Current Safari prices are just $84 for a half-day and $149 for full-day workshops. Prices range from $64 to $198 for “special Safaris” in specific “photo-op” areas, such as the Franciscan Monastery, the National Arboretum, Washington National Cathedral, the Library of Congress, Washington National Airport, and Adams Morgan, or day-long excursions to nearby cities. Longer Safaris now are offered to Wilmington, DE, Yellowstone National Park, as well as international destinations Amsterdam, Prague, and Buenos Aires. Group rates and personalized gift certificates are also available.

“Today I took the Canon Safari with Melanie Otto this morning and I wanted to let you know that it was a GREAT class!!! As, I’m sure you have been told before, Melanie was an EXCELLENT teacher. She was very personable and knowledgeable and did a great job explaining the ins and outs of my camera (something I have been trying unsuccessfully to do on my own for almost a year!) I know that my photography skills will improve greatly after learning all she taught us. I would recommend that class to anyone who wants to learn more about the camera or just photo skills in general. Thank you for organizing such a great experience!”

“Just a note to say that the Virginia Beach Photography Club wants to thank you for a memorable and exciting photo experience in the nation’s capital. Our members present on the Safari found it to be a great opportunity to grow as friends as well as photographers.”

“Thanks again for two wonderful photo Safaris. Because of you, the quality of my photographs has increased many fold. Perhaps what I enjoyed most about your classes was the great deal of attention you paid to each individual person in our group. Despite the vast range in experience and skill levels represented, you were able to guide us all with a great aura of professionalism.”

“Saturday’s Safari was the closest I’ve taken to a photography class. The simple tips on adjusting white balance, ISO settings and trick metering have—and I mean this—revolutionized my approach to taking pictures. I look forward to learning more. Thanks, again, and be well.”

“Tom and I had a fantastic time on the Yellowstone Safari. The trip, John, and Sean far exceeded our expectations. The guys complemented each other very well. They were wonderful teachers, full of patience and information. They were generous with their time and lenses! Thanks for everything. We are looking forward to our next Safari.”
