Recognized as the birthplace of American railroads in 1827, the Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad Museum is a designated National Historic Landmark. It holds the oldest and most extensive collection of trains, artifacts and historical records that documents the impact of American railroading and the B&O Railroad on American economics, culture and history.
Located on the site of the former Mt. Clare shops, the museum centerpiece is the roundhouse originally built in 1884 to service passenger cars, and rebuilt after the 2003 roof collapse under record snowfall. It contains an operating turntable used to move equipment among its other on-site buildings.

Trains, and steam railroads in particular, have been a photographic passion for most of Mark Franko’s adult life. He has photographed over fifty active steam railroads across the United States, as well as numerous U.S. railroad museums. His work has been exhibited at the B&O Railroad museum and has been published in national railroad media.
