Located where the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent River meet on Solomons Island, MD, the Calvert Marine Museum combines the story of the area’s prehistoric past, its natural environment and local maritime history to tell the story of the Chesapeake Bay.
Museum highlights include artifacts from the maritime history of the Southern Maryland region, fossils from the nearby Calvert Cliffs area, boats made and used by local watermen (including an authentic skipjack), the relocated and renovated Drum Point screwpile lighthouse, and an active river otter habitat.
The museum offers many photographic composition opportunities ranging from wide angle to telephoto – Indoors with the museum’s exhibits and aquariums and Outdoors on the wide walkways along the water’s edge of Back Creek offering numerous reflection perspectives. The museum also offers guided tours of the lighthouse interior. Blue heron and ospreys are regular visitors to museum grounds!

Mark Franko is a long-time Southern Maryland resident who recently retired after 40+ years of federal government service as an aerospace engineer and program manager for numerous tactical aircraft programs. His primary photographic interests include many 20th century historical items: steam-powered railroads, mid-century neon signs, airplanes of all eras, and lighthouses. He has photographed over 200 lighthouses in the US, many in their native habitat-at night. His railroad work was exhibited in the B&O Railroad museum, and has been published in national railroad magazines.
