David Luria Recommends Visages, Villages

David Luria’s recommendation for a French film about the joy of photography and relationships – Visages, Villages We do not usually offer movie reviews in these pages but today is an exception! If you are a photographer, you will love the new French movie Faces, Places (Visages, Villages). It is the story of a 37 year old photographer who makes friends with an 89 year old woman artist and movie director. Together they travel around France and make HUGE 40′ tall photographs of the people they meet in factories, dockyards, mining villages, and many other places, and then they paste the photographs on the walls of tall buildings, water towers, oil tanker freight cars, and shipping containers, so that all the people they meet are memorialized in a huge photographs.printed on a massive printer that is built into their camera-shaped…

In August and September, it’s time for a Fair…

There are plenty of opportunities to venture out to a fair in the surrounding counties in Maryland and Virginia. As tripsavvy.com says, there’s something special about a good old-fashioned county fair. The counties of Maryland and Virginia that surround Washington, DC each host a summer fair, complete with carnival rides, live animal shows, musical entertainment, arts and craft exhibits, contests, educational exhibits and lots of food. Each county fair has its own specialty and unique attractions. Many of them showcase regional agriculture and home arts with hands-on-activities for the whole family. Before you go to one (or more) of these fairs, learn new techniques and fine-tune your photography skills by joining WPS Instructor Essdras Suarez on one of his Street Photography – DC Safaris where he will teach you how to capture those moments that “tell the story” you see at the fair! Washington DC: A Photographer’s Paradise

Cradling the child in her arms, her left elbow thrust forward, the woman stands resolute, determined to protect the baby as she watches her home collapse in an earthquake. This scene takes place 24 hours a day in Washington DC, one block from the White House, on the grounds of the headquarters of the American Red Cross. It is depicted in the “Motherland” statue by the Armenian sculptor Sacoyan, who crafted this dramatic statue as a gesture of thanks to the American people for the help they gave to Armenia through the American Red Cross during the severe earthquake in 1988. And it is but one of hundreds of unique, often little-known,  photo opportunities that exist here in the nation’s capital, which I call “ a photographer’s paradise.” Washington, DC offers more than famous landmarks and monuments.    Like Paris, it…
