Essential to crafting a great image: A great subject!

The subject is the essence of a photograph. Granted, many other elements go into making a successful image, but a great subject – or a mundane subject presented in an unusual way is essential.

There are many treatments that can be used to select and accentuate the subject in your image:

  • Where you place the subject in the frame will influence the viewer’s perception.
Centering the subject in the frame can create symmetry and patterns while using the Rule of Thirds and locating the subject in other areas of the image, such as the left third, will draw the viewer’s eye into the image.
  • The angle or perspective chosen will also influence the viewers perception.
If it’s possible, move around the subject, experimenting with different angles and watch how the shape of the subject changes.
  • Pay attention to the angle and quality of light on the subject
Use the light to its best advantage! Backlighting the subject can create a glow or a silhouette; illuminating the subject with bright light can accentuate details and drama, creating contrast between dark and light while a soft light will create a softer, more subtle image.
  • Practice, practice, practice!
Developing an eye for interesting subjects takes time and effort. You need to go out with your camera and photograph a variety of subjects. As you photograph those subjects on a regular basis, you will begin to instinctively know what makes a great subject. You’ll see patterns or beautiful light or a unique placement and know that’s your next subject.
  • One way to develop that eye is to photograph boring subjects in unique and interesting ways. In this case, it’s not the “boring subject”, but the way it is presented that makes the image compelling, that tells a story.

WPS has many safaris that can help you with developing that “photographic eye” at venues throughout the Metro DC area – visit our website and book a safari today!
