Pennsylvania Elk Rut! A Photo Safari

Photograph the Elk in Central/West Pennsylvania as They Compete for Their Harem!

Quick Details

$ 375

Elk in Pennsylvania ? You bet! PA is home to 800-900 wild free-ranging elk, centered around the town of Benezette. From early September through Mid- October is a great time to see them, as bulls tend to harems and bugle, strut and maybe fight off a challenger during the annual rut.

Join wildlife photographer Sean Quintilian for 2 morning and 2 evening shoots. We will arrive pre-dawn each morning to set up and listen to the elk bugle in the pre-dawn light. The morning session will last until 10 or 11am. Followed by a late breakfast/lunch and a mid-day break at the hotel. We will go back out each evening for 3-4 hours. The plan is to shoot both Saturday and Sunday, morning and evening. Please let Sean know if you want to stay a third night (Sunday) at the hotel.

Photography will focus on the bull elk as they bugle, strut, herd and maybe defend their harems.
During the warmer part of the day there will also be a waterfall session that will teach use of polarizing and neutral density filters to blur water for a 30 second exposure.

Since this is a wildlife workshop, a long telephoto lens will be needed, something in the 400-500mm range, contact the instructor for any advice and help finding a rental lens if needed.

Here is what clients have said about the safari:

Sean Quintilian worked tirelessly to get us as close as possible to the PA elk! He also took us to some great fall color spots and answered questions completely. Great experience! George R. on SWELL

5 stars – I had a wonderful time on my photography trip, got some fantastic shots. Great instruction and even better company. Hillel B., Washington, DC

5 stars – I was part of the Pennsylvania Elk Rut! tour offered by Washington Photo Safari, led by Sean. Sean was amazing—knowledgeable, professional, and a great teacher. He even went out the day before our arrival to scout different areas and was able to find a herd of elk for us to photograph several times. We were able to see them clearly from about 25–75 yards away. Sean also brought all the necessary equipment to make sure we were well-fed, as we were more than 45 minutes from the hotel and the availability of restaurants in the area was limited. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, and I had a great time. Eric C., Arlington, VA

5 stars – The Elk Weekend in PA was an excellent experience. The lodging and planning was excellent. Sean did a fine job the entire weekend and worked tirelessly to get us in the right place at the right time. I would definitely travel with Sean again. Well done. Sue E., Lewes, DE
